The radios listed below I have used and tested, except for the UV-5R.  I own one, but do not have my ham license.  It is legal to listen, but you cannot transmit unless you have the license.

Something I am interested in trying out is a repeater for my GMRS radios.  A repeater can extend the range of your handheld radios.  This is accomplished by placing the repeater in a high location and having it act as a go-between for the radios.  I have found two repeaters for GMRS.  One of them is available in a Ham version, also.  These would not be too hard to set up on a small solar system.

If you have used either of these repeaters, leave a comment and let me know how they have worked for you.
